Hey, you! So nice of you to click to learn more about me, Kristina Henson.
I live in Upstate New York with my daughter, a Golden Retriever, and two cats. Before writing and illustrating my two books, One Hundred Birds Telling One Hundred Little Stories and Letters to Lily, I maintained a blog and regularly published personal essays while working in the graphic design industry by day and devoting the majority of the rest of my time doing what I love the most — writing and creating books. I love everything about books. With all that’s inside of them—the things I can learn, the places I can travel to, the characters I can fall in love with—what isn’t there to love?
I can define myself by being so many things: a mother, a daughter, a sister, an artist, an author, a designer. But most importantly—and what I remind myself of often—is that I am a woman who needs to create.
I hope you enjoy a peek into my studio and life.

Momma Bird

Momma Bird

Hey, Moms. Do you get these text messages? (Like, every time you step away from your phone for an hour?)

From my grown Lily girl:
Mom.
Mom.
Mom.
Momma.
MOM!

Me: Whaaaat? I'm working. Are you ok?

Grown Lily girl:
Yeah, everything is fine. I just wanted to know what you were doing. I want my Momma.

Motherhood is all of the things. It fills my heart, breaks my heart, energizes me, and drains me. It forces me to see pieces of myself that I don't like but can change. On the hard days, I am exhausted and crawl into bed when the sun has barely set, but I am always always always so grateful to be her
Mom
Mom
Mom.

Sometimes, I don't know if she appreciates everything I do to keep the ship from sinking, and then she sends me a song that reminds her of me, and I close my eyes and cry for what feels like hours. It's sweet and funny, and I wonder if a heart can explode from being over-filled with love.

We're ok.
We're always ok.
She's my grown little Lily girl.
